The course aims to introduce various cultural nuances that make up the South Asian diaspora living in the greater Bay Area. It will address common myths and stereotypes held by mental health professionals not belonging to the community. Content is derived from the instructor’s professional experience, alongside findings from surveys given to both members of the South Asian community and therapists working with the community. Participants will get the opportunity to understand in depth, the various groups and sub groups within the community and the role of shame, stigma and cultural norms that prevent South Asians from seeking services for mental health challenges. The impact of such avoidance on relationships both within the immediate family and that of the extended family will be explored. Educational techniques and culturally attuned interventions will be introduced and practiced during the course.
